Tl dr: I would describe both of these couples as "relationship goals". However, being able to see a an earnest and wholesome romance develop between two characters who obviously like each other and aren't stumbling around trying to deny it - especially in a genre filled to the brim with cheap paper cut-out harems, but also in comparison to many stereotypical shoujo romances - is not only refreshing but also quite healing. However the characters develop great chemistry, both as business partners, friends and romantic interests, slowly building up a strong relationship that is actually much more charming than the romance of Shin no Nakama, at least in my opinion. The romance in Spice and Wolf is much more ambiguous than Shin no Nakama - at least as far as the anime goes - with the main focus being the travelling and the cunning merchant plots serving as a base for character growth. The show also has more plot involving recurring side characters, as the story is set in a fixed location, so there's an aspect of community that takes the place of Spice and Wolf's economics and world building. Intellectual protagonists shouldn't be the reason you're watching it, but you can feel that the characters have more than the critical plot on their mind, and that they have various miscellanous considerations in their daily lives. Shin no Nakama naturally doesn't have the same level of economical depth that Spice and Wolf has, but it acknowledges some smaller considerations of the protagonist and other business owners. Spice and Wolf is still the further removed from the mainstream of the two, by which I suppose I mean Shin no Nakama stars some more idealistic aspects, but that's probably to be expected from a show about heroes.
Shin no Nakama is slightly more your typical anime fantasy in terms of setting, being oriented around heroes and demons and the idea of a holy war, but being largely separate from the action of that setting maintains a similarly gentle pace to Spice and Wolf.īoth have a warm and gentle sort of romance, a generally slow and relaxing pace with some high stakes moments, and a similarly realistic, or perhaps human world.
